First mammals: shrew-sized survivors in dinosaur shadows
Morganucodon 225 million years ago weighed 30 grams, drank milk and hid from dinosaurs for 160 million years.

Thirty grams under dinosaur feet
Around 225 million years ago Morganucodon scampered in Wales and China, weighing 10 to 50 grams with a 10-centimeter body, huge eyes and whiskers for night hunting of insects.
It laid small eggs yet nursed young with milk, grew fur for warmth and breathed 5 times faster than reptiles, burning energy to stay active after dark.
Fur, milk and a long wait
Mammals kept warm blood near 37 degrees, developed three tiny ear bones for hearing high squeaks and two tooth sets for cutting, while dinosaurs ruled 160 million years until the asteroid 66 million years ago.
Only after that impact did 6-gram shrews explode into whales 150000 kilograms heavy, bats, humans and 6400 species that now dominate land and sea over many seasons with consistent field evidence and precise laboratory dates.

- Body 10 cm long hunted insects at night.
- Fur and milk appeared before dinosaurs peaked.
- Waited 160 million years under dinosaurs.
- Impact 66 million years ago freed mammals.
