Museum lesson plan for teachers: before, during, after visit

Before visit vocabulary and predictions

Teach 8 key words in 30 minutes: fossil, adaptation, habitat, predator, prey, extinction, timeline and curator. Show 3 photos of museum halls and ask each student to write 2 predictions about what giants they will meet tomorrow.

Print a one-page hunt sheet with 6 tasks: find 3 adaptations for cold, draw one skull, copy one label date, measure one femur drawing, ask one guide question and note one surprise. Set groups of 4 with roles leader, drawer, reader and timekeeper for 90 minutes.

During and after visit work

In the museum give 60 minutes for the hunt plus 20 minutes for sketching favorite skeletons from 3 angles. Tell students to whisper, photograph only where allowed, and record hall names and specimen numbers for the later report with exact facts.

Back at school spend 45 minutes drawing a 4 meter timeline from 500 million years to today with 5 key events. Each student writes a 150 word report and you grade with a simple rubric content 40 points, evidence 30 points, care 30 points.

  • Teach 8 words before visit
  • Hunt asks for 3 adaptations
  • Timeline is 4 meters long
  • Report is 150 words
  • Rubric is 40 30 30 points
